how to firewall settings

Since introduced in Windows XP under the name Internet Connection Firewall, Windows Firewall has undergone some significant changes especially for Firewall in Windows 7.

Difference between the firewall windows XP and Windows 7 is the Windows firewall in XP can only be regulated / restricted for incoming connections (inbound), whereas in Windows 7 Firewall can be set to either filter all incoming connections (inbound) or out ( outbound).

The firewall included in Windows 7 has many functions, powerful, and also very easy to use. Suitable for users who frequently move between one network to another. Examples of home, office, or public hotspots.

To set the firewall in Windows 7 is done by going to Control Panel | Windows Firewall

Access Firewall in Windows 7

Windows Firewall provides three options namely profile Home Network, Work Network and Public Network. Home and Work Network is classified as a private network where network conditions considered relatively safe.

By selecting the option "Home Network", we can create a Homegroup where network discovery turned on and will allow us to see the other computers connected to the same network with us.
Joining a Homegroup will make a computer that can connect to share pictures, music, videos and documents and printer sharing. If there is an existing folder in the libraries we do not want to be shared can be selected to not be shared.

If you choose "Work network", network discovery will live by default but we will not be able to create or join the Homegroup. When we join the Windows Domain (Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings | Computer Name tab) and has been successfully authenticated, the Windows Firewall will automatically recognize and classify it as a domain network.

"Public Network" is the right choice when we are accessing the Internet in public areas such as restaurants, cafes, or while wearing a connection to the Internet via mobile phones. Choosing a Public Network Network Discovery will make the setting off by default so that other computers on the network can not see where you are and this will make the profile option you can not create or join the homegroup.

For each network profiles, by default Windows Firewall will block connections from programs that do not exist in the whitelist. However, Windows 7 allows you perform different settings for each profile, along with the current notification settings Firewall blocking application.

Set notifications for firewall blocked the connection

We can configure the program access options for each profile by selecting Advanced Settings on the left side of the main screen. Some of the settings that we can change include:

On / off status of the Windows firewall
Connections that go into our computer "Inbound connections" (block, block all connections or allow)
Connection that comes out of our computers "Outbound connections" (allow or block)
Notification when a program is blocked by Windows Firewall (Display notifications)
Allow unicast or broadcast traffic response
The option to use the Firewall settings and administrator's security made by local coupled with the existing settings in Group Policy settings

To set up the program, IP address range, or which ports are allowed to access the network, both for access (inbound) or exit access (outbound), was able to tune in Control Panel> Advanced Settings, then on the left select Inbound Rules or Outbound Rules.

Setting Inbound and outbound rules on firewalls

To add new rules setting menu click New Rule, and select the type of rule you want to create (program, port, predifined settings, and custom rule) and then change the value in accordance with the requirements and specify the actions to be taken whether to block or allow connections to the network.

We can also see the log / record the activities of the Windows Firewall for connections that are allowed or blocked by opening Event Viewer in menu All Programs | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer
In the left pane of the Event Viewer section select the Applications and Services Logs | Microsoft | Windows | Windows Firewall with Advanced Security to view the log details.

Another new feature in the Windows 7 Firewall that allows setting up your different profile for each network adapter. Suppose you connected to the office LAN network and is well connected with broadband internet via 3G modem, it automatically will use the LAN network profile Work Network access is via 3G modem will be set to Public Network profile.

Closing:
Broadly speaking, the presence of the Windows Firewall in Windows 7 has been equated with commercial firewall software outputs a third party such as ZoneAlarm, Symantec Endpoint Protection, Kaspersky Internet Security, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, etc..

However, as most commercial antivirus in the market already includes a firewall should not enable Windows Firewall and Antivirus Firewall simultaneously
